Wishcycling vs. Reality

Many of us have good intentions regarding sustainability. But also, many of us are miseducated about the recycling process. We discard trash in the recycle bin hoping or assuming it will actually get recycled. We’re wishcycling.

The truth? This does more harm than good, because it creates more waste. Wishcycling contaminates loads of materials that are recyclable, sending the whole batch to a landfill. The EPA’s latest reported (2018) recycling rate for the U.S. was a meager 32%. The national goal is 50% by 2030.

How do we get there? 1) Educate yourself! 2) Reduce single-use consumption. 3) Buy consciously & intentionally. 4) Rinse and dry your recyclables before tossing them. 5) When in doubt, throw it out.
